Dimona Urban Renewal Sketch Plan

After almost 50 years from its founding, the (textile industry based) economy of this desert new town is in need of positive growth. The renewal plan aims at upgrading existing neighborhoods by creating nodes and axis of cultural, art and touristic routes which connect the Beer Sheba - Eilat highway to Dimona's commercial town plaza. The plan calls for relocation of the newly opened rail terminus to a new location just opposite the town center, in order to create the intensity of pedestrian and auto-bus trip usage in order to "jump charge" the sleepy economy and tired highway frontage. The existing frontage industrial area is to be rezoned for office, motel and road services. The residential streets from the frontage road to town center are to be "in filled" with commercial-residential mixed housing so providing artisans and merchants the chance to live above their shops and contribute to a new vibrant shopping axis and pedestrian link., Other industrial and warehousing space in neglect are to be converted to cultural and entertainments centers, as well as housing various seasonal festivals and a new school of communications and cinematography. The town has recently made a number of planning mistakes, poor location of rail terminus in addition to a large shopping center across the highway from the town center, The Renewal Sketch Plan aims at redirecting the various agencies in order to set new priorities for growth which shall strengthen the core and existing neighborhoods rather than weaken them.
